Human factors engineering is also called ergonomics or human engineering which is the branch of science dealing with the application of information on physical and psychological characteristics to the design of devices and systems for human use. The term human factors engineering is used to designate equally a body of knowledge, a process, and a profession. Human factors engineering is a discipline concerned with the design of tools, machines, and systems that take into account human capabilities, limitations, and characteristics. The goals of HFE are to design for safe, comfortable, and effective human use. Ergonomics, usability engineering, and user centered design are considered synonymous. This book “Human Factors Engineering” is the discipline that attempts to identify and address these issues. It is the discipline that takes into account human strengths and limitations in the design of interactive systems that involve people, tools and technology, and work environments to ensure safety, effectiveness, and ease of use. This book deals with ergonomics, psychophysics, complex systems, stress and human performance and auditory and tactile displays. As this field is emerging at a rapid pace, the contents of this book will help the readers understand the modern concepts and applications of the subjects.
