Mechanics of metal cutting consists of study of machining process and accurate estimation of dynamic cutting forces by the use of suitable analytical models. The process of metal cutting is a subject of great importance to the makers and users of machine tools. Extensive research has gone into the subject but has still left most of the phenomena unexplained. Tool life is the main interest and before any real improvement in this factor can be made, the basic metallurgical factors governing the interaction between tool and workpiece must be better understood. This book “Mechanics of Metal Cutting Process” presents an analysis of traditional metal cutting mechanics, outlining its components and the basics of finite element modelling (FEM) of the metal cutting process. The book presents a mathematical analysis of the geometry and mechanics of the metal-cutting process. This analysis offers a key for the study of engineering problems in the field of metal cutting in terms of such fundamental quantities as strain, rate of shear, friction between chip and tool, shear strength of the metal, work done in shearing the metal and in overcoming friction, etc. The present book can be used as a book for an engineering course or for a course on machining. It can also serve as a useful reference for academics, manufacturing and materials researchers, manufacturing and mechanical engineers, and professionals in machining and related industries.
