Design is the first step in manufacturing, and it is where most of the important decisions are made that affect the final cost of a product. A faulty design may cascade into a domino effect, making even the smallest manufacturing runs hard to manage. Without addressing manufacturing throughout design, the producer exposes themselves to a plethora of errors that might have been prevented had DFM been an integral part of their process from the start. Product design for manufacturing is the optimisation of a part, product, or component’s design, to create it cheaper and more easily. Analysis techniques have been made available which can guide designers towards products which are easy to manufacture and assemble. The availability of these techniques has created a revolution in manufacturing industry, leading to reduced product cost, better quality, shorter time to market, lower inventory, few suppliers, and many other improvements. The book studies, analyses and upholds the pillars of product design for manufacturing and its utmost significance in modern times. It elucidates new techniques and their applications in a multidisciplinary approach. It deals with assemblies, development processes, product planning and identifying customer needs. The aim of this book is to provide this complex subject in an easy to understand and student friendly manner. It also explores product specifications, product architecture, selection and testing. Different approaches, evaluations and methodologies have been included in this book. Those in search of information to further their knowledge will be greatly assisted by the book.
