With more materials available today than ever before, the possibilities for invention are limitless. However, progress is only feasible if a method for making sensible decisions exists. Engineering materials refers to the group of materials that are used in the construction of manmade structures and components. The primary function of an engineering material is to withstand applied loading without breaking and without exhibiting excessive deflection. The major classifications of engineering materials include metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. The important characteristics of the materials within each of these classes are discussed on this page, and tables of material properties are also provided. Material properties limit performance, we need a way of surveying them, to get a feel for the values design-limiting properties can have. One property can be displayed as a ranked list or bar-chart. The book is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the basic to the most complex advancements in the field of materials selection. This book presents this complex subject in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language. It also focuses on materials property charts, processes and their effect on properties, conflicting objectives and designing hybrid materials. It covers the fundamentals of the topic and critically addresses the advancements in the field. As this field is emerging at a rapid pace, the contents of this book will help the readers understand the modern concepts and applications of the subjects.
